Quartz Crystal Production - Cleaning / Etching
The first step in the finishing of the quartz resonator into an electronic component is to clean the residue left from the mechanical processes of quartz blank production. The cleaning operation uses powerful surfactants and etching acids to remove contamination from the surface of the quartz blank, which can degrade the quality of the stimulating electrode to be plated later in the process. Often, the etching process will be allowed to continue to the point of actually removing the first few atomic layers of quartz. This technique has proven helpful in assuring that all partially attached quartz particles are removed and avoid their entrapment under the electrode plating.
